Yep, that's nasty! I bet it made lot's of noise. I pulled a even worse looking/functioning Chris King headset out of a bike yesterday. The bottom bearing was totally locked up and the top one was not much better. So much gunk inside the head tube that it was hard to get it all apart. I all ways thought you couldn't kill a King headset no matter what you did!
See what happens when you ride too much? You wear stuff out. Keep those bikes hanging all shiny on the wall & your stuff will last forever, that's my new motto.
Yesterday I had to use a 10 ton press, a rose bud torch, & beat it with a 10 pound hammer for 45 minutes to get a bearing off a shaft. Now that's stuck!

Until you have break out the blowtorch, hammer and chisel, it really isn't THAT BAD.
