stickin' it to the man...

Catching up with a few pictures. Saturday afternoon I made a pleasant effortless pass through the Park. Conditions were perfecto. 60's, light breeze, not overgrown yet & nobody in there?
ahhhh....
Sunday got involved in ToDR (tour of dirt roads) recon. Below: Sw72nd & Olive Creek, I think...
MC Craigio...
somewhere...
1921 railroad culvert...
says it all...
shoulder to shoulder baby...
A logical spot to dump trash is a dirt road in the country, right? This one had us wondering what was free until we found a second one just like it, "free drying". Laundromat trash...
Sprague...this town is super-close to Lincoln but doesn't get visited much. Sure we pass through it on the occasional WNW, but never stop. No convenience store but they have a really nice bar/cafe. Craigio grabbed a coke & I visited with the owner's daughter, her mom did all the artwork which she admitted needed some freshening up. This is a pit stop towards the end of the ToDR. So the route had a bunch of dirt sections, obviously, with total mileage back to Meadowlark being 83. A person could do the full route or just jet back to Lincoln from Cortland for more like 65 for the day.
Oh yeah! Stickin' it to the man...

kujo...

Always in search of a gravel adventure, my plan was to ride last year's GLGA course after work. Nice day, low 70's & overnight temps in the 40's. Pretty good scenario. I had some equipment that needed to be checked out so what better than a trial by fire. The ride went mostly as planned, well sort of.

got my eye on you...
enough already, "hey Lancaster County, stop! the roads are fine now", son of a b...! At least this stretch had a soft, power robbing edge you could grind it out on. So this is white rock by day, just wait till the sun goes down...
The wind was really tame, so tame that a vehicle's dust plume just sat in the low spots waiting for the intrepid rider's arrival to pass through the thick gritty clouds...
B Rd (literally) MMR sunset, just SE of Valpo...
Rolled into Valpo just after 8:00 pm, plenty of time to spare before the lottery cutoff:) A concerned local pointed out that it was nearly dark, & questioned me if I had a ride coming to pick me up. "Nope, I've got lights but thanks". He wandered out the door without a return comment.

On the subject of night photos, the handful I took sucked. I'm posting this one only because the semi's lights as it passed under the I-80 bridge is somewhat cool....
Back to the white rock. By night, it's a whole other animal. Speaking of which, as I rode down Little Salt headed for the SW 98th MMR section I heard a really deep loud barking coming from a house off to my right. The white rock had me dancing all over the place but I accelerated as best I could because I could here him coming through the darkness. I figured I was going fast enough to keep ahead of the charging giant coming my way, next thing I know as I turn my head & headlamp to my right there he is pounding along right next to me barking wildly. Like a freaking charging rhino, he was huge! I yelled "no" about 5 times & after about 100 feet he adjusted his onslaught to a trot. Didn't seem like he was in attack mode but definitely in the "what the f... are you doing in front of my house in the dark" mode.

Rolled through Malcolm, no need to stop the general store closes at 8:00 & pushed on to Denton. Here's where I decided I'd had enough, white rock wins. I had completed my equipment tests, all good. I had one more section I wanted to see but if I started working my way back to Lincoln soon I could be home around 1:00am with 110ish for the night. I decided to push on to the Saltillo MMR section & head in from there. If you've done this route you know how steep the exit from that section is. Pile it with fresh white rock, I mean really thick & it became nearly unrideable. I about stalled out trying to get through it. Yep, I'm done for the night.

Did get home just before 1:00am & it was 110 like I thought. Good time, I think.

the source...

So did I see anything really cool when I went up North this weekend? Not really, until my Sunday exploration ride. Found myself NW of Battle Creek with no particular plan & I ran into this structure. Church? School? For now its a hay storage site. 850th & 544th for anyone interested...
had a WWII bombed out Euro vibe going on...

Shortly after that I stumbled on some local sandy double-track. I had passed on an earlier section because I could see it was very un-rideable, too sandy. This one lured me in...
Glad I went for it, it was just firm enough to allow me to ride the whole mile section...
I passed this one on the way out but grabbed a picture on the way back. Twisty MMR with a snow patch in the distance. In the foreground is an urban reminder, some local dumb-ass had deposited a love seat...

Fast forward to last night, I found the source...

I think I won...

Last minute Friday I decided to ride up to the relatives compound outside of Battle Creek. The wind forecast wasn't ideal but that just added to the challenge. I made this journey last year with a completely favorable wind scenario, so this time I was going to earn it. I had also chosen a fairly tame route last year, primarily skirting the Bohemian Alps. This year my plan was to head right into the Alps to see what was to offer after I left my familiar zone at the Valpo turn off CR 25.
CR 25 then CR26 & voila first dirt, sweetness...
shortly thereafter, more sweetness...
oh yeah...
found about 5 miles in a 10 mile stretch...
Cr 26 feeds into North Bend, with the strong SW blowing this first leg was way faster than expected. At this point I was all smiles, that wouldn't last for long. Until now the roads were in really good shape, including the B's. I believe North Bend is Dodge County & there remedy to gravel repair is dump a bunch of loose gravel on the roads & smear it around with the maintainer's.

My 2nd leg was to be North bend to Stanton, which meant I needed to do a bunch of East to West legs to get over that direction. Oh mama! As soon as I made my first turn West on the thick gravel with the insanely strong cross wind at my left, my smile was gone & it became survival mode. Who wants it more...me or the wind & the crappy roads. Usually there was a sliver of firm-ish tire track to follow but the fierce cross wind would blow me into the deep stuff & I would battle to regain the sliver of goodness while trying to keep the front end from washing out in the deep stuff. No lie, this was probably the strongest wind I have ever ridden in. Had to be 30 with gusts above that.

To get to Stanton I let Google maps pick a "bicycling" route, it actually picked a gravel course not road, hmmm? Anyway, right on. I basically followed its recommendation with a couple stair steps added in to try to ease the pain of the cross wind's onslaught.

looks innocent enough...
At one point the journey called for an eleven mile run straight North taking me just outside Stanton. I was looking forward to this section but quickly found out it had the biggset hills I would see all day! I had no idea it was this lumpy up here. Huge, steep hills that just kept coming.
behind me...
ahead...
The odd part about the route I was given & that before mentioned eleven mile run was that it spilled into some sweet double-track MMR. On paper this should be sweet, right? If you've ever been up in this area you would know that its on the very Eastern edge of the sandhills.
My tasty double-track quickly became a ride on the beach. Two miles of this, some rideable some not...
My slow pace (hiking at times) allowed me to spy these Turkey tracks in the sand...
crossing the mighty Elkhorn @ Stanton...
Stanton to Battle Creek (actually a couple miles East in the country) would be the toughest portion yet. It was about 4:00 pm at this point & the wind had ramped up to all its fury. I crawled out of Stanton heading South to find my road West. The road going was West was terrible, deep sandy gravel with not even a sliver of goodness at times. The wind throwing every thing it had at me.

I took this picture as a thank you to this stand of trees which gave me a fraction of sweet relief on this leg...
a brief Northern leg to raise my spirits...
good afternoon friends, these guys were camped out behind some trees hiding out from the afternoon gales...
the last 10 miles I found a piece of tarmac, took time to represent...
1/4 mile from my destination I crossed the Elkhorn again, I'm hungry...
I had toyed with the idea of riding back today. Yesterday was maybe one of the hardest days I've ever had on the bike. Hard = awesome! I'm still feeling really crispy & I'm leaning towards a recovery ride up here instead. The wind looks right though:)

I think I won...
